Viviana García-Llerena, PhD, is a Research Fellow and Lecturer at the University of A Coruña, Spain, School of Law. She is also a member of the research group “Philosophy, Constitution and Rationality” at the University of A Coruña, and integrates the Spanish system of Science, Technology and Research. She has develop her career in the field of Philosophy of Law and bioethics. Her research interests and publications include Ethics of Biotechnology, Bioethics and biomedical law, Fundamental rights and Human rights approach to bioethics, Rationality and legal reasoning, Capacity, disability and surrogate decision making and, finally, Intellectual property rights and new technologies.
With the financial support of Xunta de Galicia (the Regional Government of Galicia, Spain), she is currently developing a two-year research project that links human enhancement and human rights approach to Bioethics, specifically whether human rights impose some limits to our technical capacity to make germ-line genetic modification in human embryos. This period includes a two-year post-doc research position at the Institute for Science, Ethics and Innovation, University of Manchester, United Kingdom (2014-2015) and at the Institute of Biomedical Ethics and History of Medicine (2015-2016), University of Zurich, Switzerland.
As a member of Hinxton Group, an international and interdisciplinary group which explores the ethical issues related to embryo research and stem cell science, she has signed the “Consensus Statement on Genome Editing Technologies and Human Germline Genetic Modification”, 2015, https://hinxtongroup2015.wordpress.com
She has experience as a member of two research projects granted by the Spanish Science and Education Ministry. As a result of the former, called “Principlism and Argumentation Theory in Clinical or Biomedical Decision-Making”, developed until 2013, Viviana García-Llerena has published her third book De la bioética a la biojurídica: El principialismo y sus alternativas (From Bioethics to Biolaw: Principlism and its alternatives), Comares, Granada, 2012. Her current post-doc research stay is framed in the second research project, named “The discourse of biorights: Philosophical and legal foundations and features”.
Viviana García-Llerena has won the international Prize International Society of Bioethics (SIBI)-House of Representatives of the Principality of Asturias, 2012, and the University of A Coruña’s Best PhD Dissertation Award, 2010-2011.
